History of Spices South East Asia

Spice Stories with Karien

Join us and expert guide & writer Karien Van Ditzhuijzen for a morning walk introducing you to spices in South East Asia, and how they are intrinsically interwoven into the history of Singapore.

Besides an excellent storyteller, Karien is also a keen gardener and herbalist, and will show & let us smell and taste herbs and spices, like different kinds of pepper and ginger. Topping things off she will bring Jamu, an Indonesian wellness drink for all to sample.

Spice Garden

At the Fort Canning spice garden we can spot and smell many of the spices that shaped the history of the region: spices used by the 14th century Malay royals that lived here and those from across the region like nutmeg and cloves that triggered the spice rush from the 16th century onwards and brought the colonial Europeans to the spice islands.
